Economy

Thomas L. Friedman

At a September 2010 event, New York Times columnist and Pulitzer Prize winning author Thomas L. Friedman told Greenwise participants that we needed to develop “an ecosystem of rules, standards and regulations, and most importantly, price signals to stimulate 10,000 green innovators in 10,000 garages to try 10,000 things and give us abundant, cheap, clean and reliable electrons.”

Create a self-sustaining economic sector through green jobs

Accomplishing the goals in the Greenwise Regional Action Plan demands focus from a broad partnership of people and organizations to achieve the following objectives:

  • Doubling the number of green jobs from 14,000 to 28,000 jobs
  • Creating a $1 billion investment in the Sacramento region’s green economy
  • Purchasing 20 percent of our food from local farmers and ranchers (see: “Year of Food“)
  • Creating a regional market for clean technology products (see: SARTA’s CleanStart program)
  • Retrofitting 25 percent of the region’s homes, commercial and office buildings, and school facilities (see: “Better Buildings Challenge“)
  • Designing a streamlined business permit process
  • Building a biofuels industry (see: Clean World)
